What is the ‘No Sweetie’ campaign?
We want to shine a spotlight on the paternalistic, condescending language that providers use towards people with disability. You know the type: 'sweetie', 'darling', 'champ', 'buddy', and many, many more. Although often well intentioned and seemingly benign, this language can create a harmful power imbalance that pushes (and keeps) people with disability down. We don't like it very much.
But to change this behaviour, we need your help. We need to make providers aware that these endearments cause harm - and we can only do this if you join the ‘No Sweetie’ movement. You can buy and wear our ‘No Sweetie’ merch (including a t-shirt or cap), participate in our Sweetie Bingo, make your home a ‘Sweetie Free Zone’, or share your experiences on our socials.
Together, we can rid the world of the ‘sweeties’ and ‘buddies’. What’s not to like?
